FishBase is currently the most important online encyclopaedia on fishes and incorporates many tools for ichthyologists and fisheries biologists. The focus of the training will be on fish biodiversity data and their integration into FishBase, on how to use FishBase and on how to contribute. 5 Scholarships are available for African scientists. Dear BID colleagues, GBIF has just announced this morning that, thanks to additional funding from the European Union, we will extend the Biodiversity Information for Development or BID programme to 2023, with new calls for proposals currently planned for June and September 2020. A new *Darwin Core (DwC) Hour + 2BBQs!* are almost here: *Imagining a global gazetteer of georeferences* [image: Promotion_v2.jpg] This Darwin Core Hour will consist of a 1hs Webinar and two 2hs BBQ sessions. However, it takes a great effort and resources to do so, right? Although the majority of the records shared online are not georeferenced, we have invested a huge, collective effort already; there ARE a lot of georeferenced locations already published. In GBIF, for example, there are >54M unique location strings that are georeferenced, affecting >530M occurrence records. We know that many collection/observation sites tend to be repeated across institutions and even taxa. Could we take advantage of all the effort already invested by the community? Could we use those georeferences to complete records that do not have them? The answer is: (probably) yes, and it would be awesome! SYNTHESYS+ virtual workshop: Advancing the Catalogue of the World's Natural History Collections

Dear BID colleagues, I know that some of you will have heard about this already, but I’d like to ask your help in alerting members of your networks about a virtual workshop and consultation that GBIF is coordinating in March and April. This workshop, Advancing the Catalogue of the World's Natural History Collections, consists of two parts: * A pair of two-hour preparatory webinars on 12-13 March, in which participants will discuss this draft ideas paper<https://doi.org/10.15468/doc-wnsx-ep77> * An open, facilitated online consultation that will run between 17-29 April Participants in these events will outline the scope, content and services included in a catalogue of the world's natural history collections and develop a shared road map for implementation across the biodiversity informatics community.
