GBIF opens final BID call for proposals from sub-Saharan Africa

Dear colleagues, I want to alert you that GBIF is now inviting the submission of concept notes for project funding from sub-Saharan Africa under for the Biodiversity Information for Development (BID)<http://www.gbif.org/bid> programme. The deadline for submissions is 9 April 2017, midnight CET / 2300 UTC/GMT. The total potential funding assigned to this call is €400,000, and applicants successful in this round will receive invitations to submit full proposals in May 2017. Read the complete calls for Africa in English<http://bid.gbif.org/en/calls/africa-2017/introduction>, French<http://bid.gbif.org/fr/calls/africa-2017/introduction> and Portuguese<http://bid.gbif.org/pt/calls/africa-2017/introduction> (coming soon) This call, like those that preceded it, seeks projects that will: * Mobilize biodiversity data relating to protected areas, threatened species, and invasive alien species * Use and extend best practices for digitizing natural history collections and mobilizing other biodiversity data * Apply biodiversity data in support of decision-making and research * Develop lasting national, regional or thematic networks to support ongoing data sharing and reuse Types of grants In this call, GBIF invites proposals in two categories of grants. * National biodiversity data mobilization grants that establish or strengthen national biodiversity information facilities<http://www.gbif.org/resource/80925> and to increase the biodiversity data available about the country to respond to national priorities. Up to €40,000 will be made available per national grant. * Small biodiversity data mobilization grants that mobilize biodiversity data relevant for biodiversity conservation priorities, with a maximum funding of €20,000. Application process and timeline A panel of international experts with experience in the region will evaluate applications through a competitive two-stage process. * Applicants must submit initial concept notes using the provided template<http://bid.gbif.org/raw/BID-Concept-Note-Template-Africa-2017.docx> by 9 April 2017. * Based on the panels’ recommendations, GBIF will invite a select group of applicants to prepare full proposals, expected to be due in July 2017. * Following the panel’s final review and selection, funded projects will start in October 2017. GBIF expects to announce these projects publicly by November 2017. The concept note template and accompanying guidelines are available for both types of grant on the BID grantseekers’ site<http://bid.gbif.org/>. The first round of BID project funding provided nearly €1 million to 23 projects in sub-Saharan Africa<http://www.gbif.org/newsroom/news/first-bid-grants-for-africa>. Recipients include 34 organizations from 20 African countries, whose projects earned selection from an initial pool of 143 initial proposals. Selected applicants to the recent calls for proposals from the Caribbean and Pacific have received an invitation to submit full proposals later this week (26 February). Dans le cas des projets de jardin botanique, l’objectif principal à accomplir sur le court terme devra être de développer ou d’améliorer la gestion de collections afin qu’elles puissent être utilisées par les scientifiques dans le cadre de leurs recherches, de programmes de conservation ou bien valorisées auprès du public. Les projets sélectionnés devront : i) être portés par une institution originaire de l’un des 22 pays couverts par le programme (cf liste ci-dessous) ii) concerner des collections de plantes, d’importance patrimoniale, nationale ou régionale iii) dans le cas des projets d’herbier : concerner principalement des collections déjà existantes, i.e. avec des spécimens déjà collectés iv) dans le cas des projets de jardins botaniques : s’appuyer sur une structure disposant de capacités de gestion de collection. Hope this can trigger some discussion Abstract: In October 2010, Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a Strategic Plan for Biodiversity. They agreed that by 2020 at least 17% of terrestrial areas should be conserved within effectively managed protected areas. Currently, coverage stands at 14.7%. Although this is a positive trend, an additional USD 9.2 to USD 85 billion is needed annually to expand and secure protected areas, especially in Africa. In this context, governments and practitioners have repeatedly called for new and innovative financial mechanisms to be explored that would complement official development assistance, be predictable and stable. This study aims to unpack the potential benefits and risks of innovative financial mechanisms at work in Africa through the analysis of three case studies: an environmental trust fund created to finance the network of protected areas in Côte d'Ivoire; a conservation concession agreement (and thereafter a REDD-related private non-profit company) in the Gola Rainforest in Sierra Leone; and a biodiversity stewardship and tax incentive approach developed in South Africa. According to the study, essential financial and institutional innovations are at play and, when public and private involvement are effectively combined, not only can innovative financing contribute to more efficient management in and around protected areas, but it can take place on a significant scale. In this regard, three significant findings emerged: first, that private funding is a complement, rather than a substitute, to public financial support; second, that co-ordination of private and public action benefits from a contractual approach that favours conditionality; and third, this contractual approach needs to be secured at the regulatory level. However, innovative mechanisms remain complex and numerous stakeholders and conditional agreements generate significant transaction costs. JRS Biodiversity Foundation calls for proposals for freshwater and pollinator biodiversity informatics for Africa

Dear everyone, I am Aisha, new temporary Programme Officer for Participation and Engagement (PO) at GBIF Secretariat as from 1st January 2017. As part of the Participation and Engagement team at the Secretariat, my role will involve providing support to the GBIF Participant Nodes, and other participants/communities involved.
