IPT 2.5.1 release

Dear IPT users, This is to inform you that version 2.5.1 of the IPT has been released. This version addresses a bug introduced in version 2.5.0, which prevented the IPT from connecting to database sources. Users who connect the IPT to database sources will need to upgrade to 2.5.1. Three other issues are also addressed: - Limit the number of warnings on a page - Increase the upload file size limit from 100MB to 200MB - Introduce an overwrite confirmation window for URL sources. Upgrade and installation instructions are in the new manual [1]. Please remember to check your data directory backup is working before starting the upgrade! IPT 2.5.0 release

Dear IPT users, A new version of the IPT has been released, version 2.5.0. This version addresses 81 issues. A full list of all changes is available on GitHub[1], but the new or improved features include: • A fresher-looking user interface, which should still be familiar to existing users • The user manual has been converted from the GitHub Wiki to AsciiDoctor/Antora, and is now published here: https://ipt.gbif.org/manual/ . The move has allowed GBIF's worldwide Spanish-speaking community to translate the manual; their work is mostly done. • The "double log in" bug is fixed • Source data files can now be downloaded by a resource manager • Auto-publishing can now be set to specific, future dates • Archive mode can be limited to a set number of old archives to retain • A new health/troubleshooting page reports common system problems, like running out of disk space or incorrect filesystem permissions • The administration contact (for forgotten passwords) is now configurable • The initial setup is improved to ensure a correct configuration • Database (JDBC) drivers have been updated • A URL can now be used as a data source Upgrade and installation instructions are in the new manual [2]. IPT 2.5.0

Hi folks I'd like to start by introducing myself. I am Mikhail Podolskiy, a software developer at the GBIF Secretariat. I will now be taking lead responsibility for the IPT, and will be developing the IPT following the recommendations from the consultation we held last year at the TDWG sessions. I am happy to announce that a TEST version of the forthcoming IPT 2.5.0 is available and ask if you could please help us in testing and translation. Please see the "Releases" page in the user manual for download links and upgrade instructions: https://ipt.gbif.org/manual/en/ipt/2.5/releases/ This version addresses 63 issues [1] including the famous "double log in bug" and brings in a fresher looking user interface. There are 7 further issues that we will address before the final release. This version is a release candidate, named 2.5.0-RC1 and is not suitable for production use. The new interface will need some new translations. Existing or new translators may use the Crowdin project[2] to add and update translations in traditional Chinese, French, Japanese, Persian, Brazilian, Russian and Spanish. It would be very helpful if you could help by exploring the functions you are familiar with, and if you run security tests arrange for this to happen. Please report any issues on the IPT GitHub [3]. TDWG workshop report: BioCASe and IPT

Dear all, (Cross posting to multiple lists, so my apologies if you receive this more than once) During the TDWG Working Group sessions we held two virtual workshops to capture ideas and hold discussion around the future of the BioCASe and GBIF IPT tools. IPT release 2.4.2

Dear IPT users, A new version of the IPT has been released, version 2.4.2. This version fixes a bug introduced by the security update released last Thursday, where some resources in the IPT would fail to load after the upgrade. The new version is available for download at https://repository.gbif.org/content/groups/gbif/org/gbif/ipt/2.4.2/ipt-2.4.… . New CentOS packages and Docker containers have also been generated, please see https://github.com/gbif/ipt#latest-release-242 . Please read the release notes, particularly if you are not upgrading from version 2.4.0 or 2.4.1: https://github.com/gbif/ipt/wiki/IPTReleaseNotes233.wiki No data was lost with the bug in version 2.4.1, but when upgrading it's a good idea to check your backup procedures are running correctly. Very occasionally, users have accidentally deleted data, or disks in servers have failed. The IPT data directory should be backed up regularly to a different place, as well as any custom configuration (e.g. Apache configuration, or custom styling applied to the IPT). Dear IPT users, A new version of the IPT has been released, version 2.4.1. This version includes security updates from Apache Struts and other code libraries the IPT uses. IPT virtual workshop at TDWG (24/25 September)

Dear all, I am pleased to announce that we will run a free "virtual workshop" on the IPT at the TDWG 2020 conference. The workshop [1] will be held over two 90 minutes sessions starting at 14:30UTC on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th September [2] and is being run jointly with the BioCASe community. This is open to anyone who registers for the conference [3]. This workshop aims to capture ideas and requirements to help guide the future direction of the IPT. We are aware of requests for usability improvements and the limitation of the "star schema" imposed by the Darwin Core Archive format and expect these to be topics in the workshop. As we plan for the workshop: - are there major topics that you would like to see discussed? (standards, APIs, functionalities, integrations with open repositories etc) - have you strong ideas of changes you would like to see in the IPT (or not see) that you would like to present during the workshop? We welcome feedback before 8th September to help us plan for a fruitful discussion. how to do when you have more than one sampling method for the same plant plot

Dear all, One of our publishers is preparing an event based dataset with plant surveys, where two measurements were taken at each location: a Braun Blanquet Scale value and % of coverage. The normal option to create this dataset would be to make two event records for each plot, one for each survey method. This allows to preserve all original data, but will result in two occurrences for the same species at the same plot. The other option would be to report only one of the survey methods, avoiding occurrence duplication, but not preserving data for the other method. Would anyone have a suggestion how to prepare the dataset, so that it keeps values for both methods and does not create duplication of occurrences? Or the duplication is not an issue, and we should publish data for both methods?
