II meeting option - with TDWG or separately?

Hello group, I have not set the Doodle poll for the II meeting yet. Following Quentin's observation of the unfortunate timing of Meeting II -> Report -> TDWG, I spoke to Donald and he does not mind you delaying the report until 15 Dec, if you think it is productive to have it TDWG -> Meeting II -> Report. I am not sure that the sequence matters that much; of course progress in the standards is an expected recommendation type for your report, but you can possibly decide and agree first in the group, what is desirable and the push it through TDWG voting or discussion in parallel, or after the report? If we meet straight after TDWG in Costa Rica this might (needs to be checked) also cheaper, as seems like at least Quentin and myself will be there anyway. Melodie, your travel limitations is of course the first thing to check. With Costa Rica option, we are talking about dates around 10-14 Dec. If that is suboptimal after all, I will send a Doodle about the dates as originally planned. I forgot I am at the Entomological congress in the end of Sep, so the corridors of dates for me are 5-14 and 24-31 Oct. I think for the final report we will need three full working days excluding travel dates. What do you think? Dmitry

Proposing Changes to Darwin Core

Dear All, I thought I'd introduce you to an initiative I've started to make changes to the Darwin Core Standard. This seems to be relevant to the Task Group and something we could point to as a concrete outcome. For a long time I have been bothered by the definition and suggested vocabulary for the establishmentMeans field in Darwin Core ( http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/). It doesn't seem fit for purpose and conflates various concepts. For this reason I've drafted a proposal for the TDWG organisation to change Darwin Core. This involved adding a new term "origin"; changing the definition of occurenceStatus and changing the controlled vocabulary of establishmentMeans. You can read the proposal on GitHub (https://github.com/qgroom/DwC_Proposal.git), but I've also attached a version here. I really welcome your comments and I'd be happy if you want to co-propose it with me. Hello group, Tim Hirsch (cc) would like to remind you on vocabularies on pathways developed by Donald and the informatics team for the latest CBD/GIASIP work, based on the IUCN pathways categorization now accepted by the CBD (http://rs.gbif.org/sandbox/vocabulary/issg/status.xml) Tim also wrote that it is probably worth considering the new 'IAS impact' categories currently being developed by IUCN to mirror their extinction risk categories - see attached slide from Piero Genovesi's presentation to the SBSTTA side event in April. They are not in operation yet, but it might be some good future thinking to consider how these species-level attributes could be included in shared data. We have agreed that meeting is on 9-11 July, so our official travel dates are 8 and 12 July.
