Invitation to join GBIF Workshop - Ecology Across Frontiers - Deadline 26 April 2017

Dear colleagues, GBIF will be represented at the British Ecological Society meeting in Gent in December 2017, with the main goal to promote sharing and use of sampling event data [1, 2] . We will also have an exhibition booth. Most of you know already that BES is an international ecology conference, over 1200 participants are expected. I will submit a workshop proposal in response to the invitation below. If you or you contacts are coming to BES 2017, and you feel like joining, please add you names and your lines to this Google doc by Wednesday 26 April 10:00 Copenhagen time: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13mzsyTWWs8KSF77zMdNn6Ov6ko0PfEG_Mb5l6Hv…. The working title is Open Data in Ecology. The form is very short and we can achieve a lot by forming a team of open data enthusiasts and by sharing our ideas in Belgium later this year. Hello Task Groups, Science Committee cc comms, Andrea, You agreed to have your mailing lists active, and I'd like to ask for your help in one (surely easy for you) matter: Could you please name a few important modelling and statistical analyses methods where quantitative and presence-absence data makes a difference, in contrast with presence-only? GEO BON and GBIF are preparing the joint campaign on mobilization of sampling event data, to grow content in this segment: https://demo.gbif.org/dataset/search?type=SAMPLING_EVENT Since the number of such dataset is still very low, we cannot yet demonstrate the academic reuse. Instead, we would like to be clear about analytical potential of such data. In other words, what kind of analyses and modeling you can do with ecological data, and can't with museum / isolated observation data? Why should one share quantitative and presence-absence data through GBIF? Which uses and analyses will it enable? I appreciate if you just reply with a few names of such methods, we will google the rest and summarize. Comments also welcome, if you have time. Thank you in advance. Hello all, Many of you are aware of ongoing TDWG 2016 conference, this is just to make sure that you know that you can follow TDWG 2016 conference live streamed, or watch the recorded videos here: https://idigbio.adobeconnect.com/_a1130716096/tdwg2016 FYI Next TDWG will take place in early October 2017 in Ottawa, and the will be e.g. an agrobiodiversity data section. We have a very good agrobiodiversity section today, there will be a section on alien and invasive species, and many talks relate to distribution modelling and data use in this or that way.
