Set of short presentations about IPT
Dear friends of the IPT list,
During the last meeting of the GBIF Governing Board we had a 1,5 hours session on the IPT addressed to GBIF Node Managers (those in charge of coordinating the biodiversity information networks that form GBIF).
We tried to keep this session basic in the technical level, but informative for anyone who is evaluating the IPT as an alternative for biodiversity data publishing. I would like to share with you the presentations displayed during that season. I hope you can use them in future IPT promotional activities. There are 6 very short presentations, that could be easily merged into a single one if needed.
The original presentations are in English. Does anyone volunteer to translate them into other languages and share them with the community? If you are interested drop me an email and we will coordinate the efforts!
The presentations are hosted in the GBIF Community Site, that is still in its closed alpha testing phase. Once the open beta testing starts, I trust we will used it also for interactions regarding the IPT. I will inform the list when this happens.
With best regards
Alberto

Dear Alberto,
I send you hereby my proposition for the French translation of the 4th presentation (the longest of all).
I unfortunately hadn't the time to make new screenshots in French from my test installation of the IPT so I left them in English.
I sometimes had to slightly modify the layout of the slides as French is more verbose as English and uses more characters and lines to catch the same idea.
Please let me know if you wish further translation for the other presentations.
Best regards,
franck

Dear All,
I am trying to get my resources online with IPT toolkit (V1.0RC2, on Windows 2003 Server), which I manage with Firefox 3.5.4 (Mac), through the standard web interface.
When done seemingly everything as supposed to, I am still unable to EXPLORE my data, saying that 0 records are uploaded etc, getting no dots on the map and no other analytics.
As I have updated some data and columns and would like to exchange the new data resource with the old one. However, deleting the resource leads to a server crash with a long page of YIKES (page available), and the server needs to be reset then. The resource is still there anyway, not deleted.
Any idea how to go on?
best Fabian
Fabian,
how long did the upload last? Any entries in the event logs (Manage --> Resource Configuration --> Section Cache database)?
Cheers from Berlin, Jorg

Dear all
ah well could not find the protocol, I believe I have seen something like that, but can you be even more precise with this.
alas I have to agree that IPT is very unstable, half of the things I am trying to do end up in a server restart...
Is the long YIKES listing useful to anybody? Than I would send it around.
Best from Nairoby

Dear Fabian,
Thank you for this stack trace.
I believe this relates to the bugs previously reported all relating to deleting a resource (#59, #67, #69, #101, #132, #151, #155, #194) http://code.google.com/p/gbif-providertoolkit/issues/list?can=1&q=delete...
You can see that some of these issues have been fixed already, but not yet released, and the remaining ones are underway to be fixed for the next release (in particular http://code.google.com/p/gbif-providertoolkit/issues/detail?id=155&can=1...) .
The next release of the IPT will be in the coming 2-3 weeks which will have many bug fixes. I recommend that you continue evaluation but consider upgrading to the newest version when it is released.
Please accept our apologies for the bugs you are seeing.
Best wishes, Tim

Dear Tim,
thanks for the quick response. I will definitely go for the update, and so it seems to me that many of the problems I encounter are known to others too. So I wont go for additional reports, rather wait and see what RC3 brings.
Maybe a suggestion for a feature (that might be there, but I have overlooked it). Would there be a way to check the consistency of the EXCEL (rather its .txt version) sheet, on consistency, before you Cache/Import the database?
Then I could make correction, since in another version I did a mistake in a running number. The I could fix that before the import. Or maybe some extra little application , not connected to the IPT, offline/local.
Yes mistakes happen, I programmed a lot (quite some time ago) but its sooooo frustrating to get incomprehensible YIKES... and not really get a clue what to do about it.
Best Fabian

Thank you for your understanding and patience Fabian,
There are others also who have requested validation and transformation tools, and they are on the longer term roadmap.
I have added an issue to improve the error messages - you are quite correct that they are way too technical. I will suggest a "user friendly message" with a "please submit the following technical details when reporting an issue" be added to the user interface. (http://code.google.com/p/gbif-providertoolkit/issues/detail?id=241&start... )
I am afraid I can't see http://kupe.icipe.org:8080/. I can't ping kupe.icipe.org (Unknown host)
Thanks, Tim

Dear Tim,
thanks for the quick response.

Dear Fabian, Thank you for this stack trace. Best wishes, Tim On Nov 11, 2009, at 8:36 AM, Fabian Haas wrote:

thanks for the help! This is a 'fresh' YIKES! report provoked through deleting the "Tse Tse Flies of East Africa" resource from within the IPT.
here is also the Cache Database section, ... well no, I dont find it, there is only an import button, and then the whole fracas starts again...

Fabian,
after logging in, go to "Manage", then choose the resource you're trying to get running. On the menu on the right, click "Mappings", then scroll down to the "Cache database" section.
Can you copy & paste what's written in that section?
Cheers, Jörg

Dear All,
I am trying to get my resources online with IPT toolkit (V1.0RC2, on Windows 2003 Server), which I manage with Firefox 3.5.4 (Mac), through the standard web interface.

Hi Fabian,
It would be best to create an IPT Issue in the issue tracker (http://code.google.com/p/gbif-providertoolkit/issues/entry) and include the file, or some portion of it if it is large, so that the problem can be reproduced, troubleshot, and tracked.
Cheers,
John
