Please remember that the data directory should be backed up in your disaster recovery planning as well (e.g. copied periodically to an offsite location).

Where did you place your data directory? It sounds like you may have placed it in a location that the server deletes (like /tmp for example).
Please can you use the ipt users lists for this kind of discussion to ensure everyone benefits.
